Overlooking the Savannah River in North Augusta stands a municipal building that houses more than just the routine operations of a city’s government. The four-story facility, which boasts a traditional design while maximizing modern usage, is also home to the North Augusta Arts and Heritage Center. In this capacity, it offers two rotating art galleries, a permanent history exhibit, and a gift shop where visitors can purchase local art.
The Palmetto Terrace is a third major feature of the building and includes a ballroom plus a full commercial kitchen. The popular event site is used for everything from wedding receptions to conferences. The multi-use building is not only functional but also offers river views from its atrium and exterior balconies, which can be enjoyed by all city residents.
The municipal building brings people to its doors for a variety of reasons – business and pleasure – but its location connecting to the North Augusta Greeneway ensures that those with extra time can spend the day enjoying the natural beauty of the city. Planning for the building began in 2002, the land was purchased in 2005, and ground was broken in 2007. The building was designed by the Boudreaux Group from Columbia and opened in 2009.
