We are eager to learn more about St. Nicholas, and we are actively seeking additional information. If you can help, please add information below. Thank you!

St. Nicholas Lutheran Church – located in the small community of Jennys, just over eight miles east of Fairfax – was built in 1910 and as such is just over a century old. The congregation itself, however, dates to at least 1804.

St. Nicholas was organized by early German settlers in the Barnwell District (now known as Allendale County), and it is suspected that these settlers were once associated with Mt. Pleasant Church in nearby Ehrhardt, which dates to 1750.

The congregation met in several locations before finding a permanent home. One earlier sanctuary, built in 1884, was located about two miles north of this site. That church burned, but materials from it were salvaged to build the existing structure.

St. Nicholas Lutheran Church is the mother church of Trinity Lutheran Church, organized in 1906 and also located in Fairfax. The Reverend Martin Eric “Marty” Matthis served both St. Nicholas and Trinity for 18 years, until his death in 2016.

Hi! We do not right off hand, but do you have access to GenealogyBank.com, Newspapers.com, or Newsbank.com by chance? Those are great resources for old newspaper archives where stories could have been placed in years past. We definitely suggest taking a look at any of those to see if something of interest may pop up. It typically does!

Hi, I am wondering if you have any history of St. Nicholas Lutheran Church dating back to the mid to late 1800s? My maiden name is Berry and I have been researching my great great grandfather, B. F. Berry, who I believe was a Pastor there as well as other churches in the area. I would appreciate your assistance in any way. Thank you.
