Edisto Beach State Park — Edisto, South Carolina
SC Picture Project | Charleston County | Edisto Beach State Park
Edisto Beach State Park on Edisto Island is one of four oceanfront South Carolina state parks. Its biking and walking trails wind through the maritime forest and provide ample wildlife viewing opportunities beneath the island’s majestic live oak trees (Quercus virginiana).
The Spanish Mount walking trail takes visitors to the state’s second oldest Native American pottery site, the trail’s namesake Spanish Mount.
The shell mound dates to at least 2,000 B.C. Though it has eroded significantly over time, the mound is still tall, between eight and twelve feet high. Visitors are prohibited from touching the mound.
Edisto Beach State Park also features an environmental education center which highlights the island’s natural history and the surrounding ACE Basin. The center exists within an eco-friendly building and displays artifacts and materials related to local Native American history and culture as well as information on the island’s rich natural history.
Fishing, boating, kayaking, and geocaching are popular activities within the park, though bird watching remains a big draw to this lush Lowcountry sylvan. Cabins and campsites are available for overnight guests, and wireless internet connection is provided.
For daytrippers, the park’s many trails allow people to wander through the forest for hours, lost in the sounds of the local fauna and roaring ocean. Even better news? Dogs are allowed!
Picnic tables, shelters, and playgrounds also welcome folks who wish to spend their afternoon within the natural beauty of Edisto Island State Park.
