Visitors can fish from commercial docks along the boardwalk or just enjoy the pristine views from within the creek. The park is not just a recreational amenity but also an educational one, as nearby Moultrie Middle School utilizes the park for hands-on learning.

On August 24, 2016 the city opened an additional 1,500-foot-long section of boardwalk that connects to the original, providing spectacular birding opportunities. A third phase is planned for the future and will include a pedestrian bridge over Shem Creek, crossing at Coleman Boulevard.

A popular fixture along Shem Creek is this Great Egret known affectionately by locals as Henry. Henry can be seen daily along the boardwalk posing for pictures or trying to scope out a fisherman’s latest catch.
