Fishing Creek Hydro Station — Great Falls, South Carolina
SC Picture Project | Chester County | Fishing Creek Hydro Station
The Fishing Creek Hydro Station on the Catawba River in Chester County (bordering Lancaster County) was built in 1916 by the Southern Power Company, predecessor to the station’s current owner, Duke Power.
As its name implies, the creek is a popular area for fishing and recreation. Fishing Creek Lake – created by the dam – has four access point along the 61 miles of shoreline, including Landsford Canal State Park.
Reflections on the Fishing Creek Hydro Station
Contributor Perry A. Clanton shares his experience capturing the above photo of the Fishing Creek Hydro Center: “This is Fishing Creek Hydro Station, Duke Energy. It is located on the Catawba River at the Lancaster/Chester county line. The main station is located in Chester County just northeast of the town of Great Falls. Fishing Creek was built in 1916; this area was the birthplace of electricity. I took the picture under the South Carolina Highway 200 bridge. Me and my son were on a picture-taking day trip.”
