Jacksonboro Farmhouse

Pale light shines through sprawling, moss-draped tree limbs which tower over this vacant farmhouse near Jacksonboro in Colleton County.

Jacksonboro is in a very rural area now, but in the late 1700s it was on a busy stagecoach running between Charleston and Savannah. During the Revolutionary War, when Charleston was occupied by the British, the South Carolina General Assembly held meetings here. The Senate met at the Masonic Lodge and the House met at a local tavern.

Before Walterboro became the county seat in 1817, Jacksonboro served as the original seat of local government for Colleton County.

Photographer Rebeccah Connelly tells us, “We had been wandering around Jacksonboro and happened to take a Westvaco road to cut through back to the highway. We happened upon this farm that had some of the most impressive scenery I’ve seen in a while. Gorgeous!”

I love this photo…Both lonely and lovely leaving the imagination to think of former days and inhabitants long gone. Thanks for the photo.
