Though Smoak and many of his descendants were Baptists, the Methodist movement gained ground in Colleton County when John Wesley preached at Pon Pon Chapel in 1737 and Bishop Francis Asbury preached at the Methodist Meeting House in 1796. As a result, many Methodist churches were established in Colleton County.
