Algary School — Donalds, South Carolina
SC Picture Project | Greenwood County | Algary School
While we know little about this building thus far, we believe it is the old Algary School in Shoals Junction, near present-day Donalds in Greenwood County. This area was originally known as Barmore or Barmore’s Turnout, but the name changed when the Ware Shoals Railroad was constructed in 1903. The newly-constructed track tied into the main route and was called Ware Shoals Junction. The name had been shortened to Shoals Junction by about 1909.
Like many rural areas in South Carolina, communities formed around railroads junctions and expanded or declined with the economy. Comparing this photograph to an old insurance photograph from the 1950s, it appears to match. We are actively seeking additional information to add to this entry.
