This chapel in Conway measures 12-by-24 feet and seats twelve people. Called the Travelers Chapel for its location along United States Highway 501 near popular Myrtle Beach, the tiny building was added to the Grand Strand landscape in 1972.
According to deacon Tommy Jones, hundreds of wedding ceremonies have taken place in this quaint chapel over the past four decades, though many people also enjoy stopping here along their travels for prayer or meditation. The door remains unlocked, and visitors are invited to write in a guest book at the altar. The interior of the building includes a narrow aisle flanked by two rows of three pews each, each pew seating two people.
The artist Tim Matthews of Conway shares this beautiful rendition of the Travelers Chapel that he painted after discovering the church shortly after he moved to the area.
Ceremonies here are free, but donations for the upkeep of the chapel are welcomed. The chapel has survived a felled tree during a storm, a fire, and vandalism over its lifetime. The Travelers Chapel is one of the smallest churches in America.
The owner/caretaker of the Travelers Chapel is Mr. Mike Strite. His phone number is: 717-201-4382. Donations for the upkeep of Travelers Chapel can be mailed to: The Travelers Chapel, Inc., 167 Wind Meadows Drive, Conway, SC 29526. Please do not send donations to wedding officiants mentioned in the comments below.
Does anyone know who had this built?
It appears that the chapel was built through community donations. This is found on the official website: “One of the smallest churches in the United States, The Traveler’s Chapel was constructed in 1972. Funded by community donations it has been a welcoming inspiration to those traveling US Hwy 501 between Conway and Myrtle Beach, SC.” For more information, there is a contact number. Eric Hunt – Myrtle Beach Wedding Officiant, 843-712-0762. Hope this helps!
I have had the honor of officiating the loveliest ceremonies here! I encourage donations from couples and there are donation envelopes in the Chapel.
I would like some information on having my wedding at Travelers Chapel. Where would I make a donation at? Do I need to plan this with you before planning the date or how does it work?

Beautiful, serene chapel.
Please contact me. We would love to be married in your church and gladly give donations. Do you guys marry or would we need our own preacher?
Hi, Lorie, and congratulations! Here is the link to the Conway Chamber of Commerce that includes a phone number for the chapel. We are not connected with the chapel or the city, but hopefully someone at the Chamber of Commerce can help you. In fact, your question has prompted me to include this information on our page! Best of luck!
