SC Picture Project / Jasper County / Thelma and Louise

Those wishing to buy fireworks from Papa Joe’s in the Jasper County town of Hardeeville must first face a formidable duo standing sentry at the entrance. Dubbed Thelma and Louise by locals, these guardian elephants attract both customers and curiosity-seekers traveling along I-95.

Reflections on Thelma and Louise

Frequent contributor Mike Stroud shares the following about the plaster pachyderms: “This is a cute landmark, affectionately known by many locals as Thelma and Louise from the popular movie. Located in Jasper County at Hardeeville, I-95 exit 5, US 17 South at Papa Joe’s Fireworks, Souvenir, Gift and Novelty Store, this pair of elephants has stood in the parking lot, catching the eye of passersby, for more than a decade.”
