SC Picture Project / Marion County / Antioch Baptist Church

This congregation in rural Sellers in Marion County was founded in 1829. The church sign in front of the meeting house-style sanctuary is dedicated to Isham and Mary Watson, early settlers to the area who were instrumental in the church’s founding. Descendants of the Watsons hold an annual reunion at the church, a tradition that began in 1904. People gather at the church from all over the country – even as far as Hawaii – to celebrate family and faith. Former state senator and lieutenant governor Yancy McGill regularly presides over the event.
