The SC Picture Project is a permanent digital repository built to document South Carolina’s historical and natural landmarks before they are lost to time. Each week, we are able to add roughly 25 new images, generously donated by volunteer photographers and artists.
However, we desperately need help writing histories to accompany these pictures.
If you have a special connection to a South Carolina landmark, please consider sharing your knowledge. We are interested in historical facts as well as personal anecdotes.
Your contribution can focus on the site’s history, or it can focus on your memory or experience of the place. Did you grow up near this landmark? Did you once work here? Is it located in your hometown? Did you have family who once lived nearby? No matter what your connection is, we’d love to learn more about it and share it with our readers.
To get started, just fill in the form below. You will receive full credit for your contribution.

I was born in Michigan and live in Florida. My husband’s family included Sarah Schardt. Respecting her age, we called her Mimi. Mimi was like a mother to my husband, to me, and to all the family members related to her. They are a most wonderful family and I’m grateful to know them. What a sincere, warm, and genuine person Sarah (Mimi) Schardt was! Mimi loved talking about her Pine Grove School and riding in her small pony-drawn cart to school. She taught us her school cheer. We have taught Mimi’s cheer to others. My husband and I visited Pine Grove this last decade. We asked many if there might be a sincere interest in learning the Pine Grove cheer. There wasn’t. I’m proud to now be passing it on to a nearby private school. It needs to be kept in use so I’m delighted they care. In my opinion, the cheer belongs to all who might value the children who attended this wonderful place called Pine Grove School.
If possible, please send me a paper copy of my message to you. I want to share it with the Schardt family, Mimi’s family. You can mail it to me @ 1350 Sea Hawk Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32963.
I have studied this place and the history is fascinating. A marker should be placed there and a guided trail to the beach would be helpful. Somebody in South Carolina could make this happen. You had to pay an entrance fee to cross the bridge to get to the beach. I have a picture of the bathhouse Lillian Pyatt dated before the Hurricane. I’d love to know anyone who can remember attending those that great music. It must have been true heaven for the many Black people who had no beach available.
Wonderful idea and a real connection to history! Thank You!
