SC Picture Project / South Carolina / Benton Henry

Meet Benton Henry, a Latta-based photographer who has traveled the world but always come home to South Carolina. Benton has been one of the Picture Project’s greatest supporters over the years, and we are deeply grateful for both his contributions and his friendship.

Benton in His Own Words …

“At 12 years old, I saw a nighttime photograph of the Roman coliseum made by Winfred Parks for National Geographic magazine. I loved that image and thought how cool would it be to be the person who was actually there making the image. (Story behind this story – I made friends with a National Geographic photographer many years later, and it turned out he – as new photographer – was working with Mr. Parks on that same issue!)

“More than 40 years later, I still love making images. My work has been published over 400 times, and everyday of shooting is a good day! There is great satisfaction that the images I make have been used by people and companies to represent the best of what they do and who they are.

“I am a member of the American Society of Media Photographers, American Photographic Artists, and the International Association of Architectural Photographers.”

More about Benton …

Hometown:  Latta – born and raised! I live in my grandparents’ home which is 50 feet from my parents’ house. Friends like to kid me about not getting too far from home, but I like to remind them that I have been to sixteen countries and all fifty states – I just love a great home base!

Family:  Tina and I have been married for 25+ years and have a daughter, Elizabeth. Elizabeth has my sense of adventure and Tina’s love for education. Elizabeth travelled to China in 2016.

Work & Hobbies:  Photography happens to fit both of those. I work as a self-employed commercial photographer specializing in architectural photography and on-location portraits. On the hobby side, I like to photograph scenic, historical and natural subjects. Sometimes the two overlap!

Favorite SC Places:  There are so many – and not just places but times of year. The Pee Dee River in the fall, along the coast in the winter, the mountains in the spring – South Carolina has something for everyone anytime!

Favorite Quote:  “Happy are the artists who see beauty in a modest place where others see nothing.”
