The purpose of the South Carolina Picture Project is to celebrate the beauty of the Palmetto State while preserving some of its vanishing landscapes.
South Carolina played a key role in the Civil War. The state was the first to secede from the United States, and cadets from the Citadel fired the first shot from Fort Johnson on James Island. Large swaths of South Carolina were demolished by Sherman’s Army, and Port Royal, in Beaufort County, became a bulwark in the education of former slaves.
