Salters Depot

Salters Depot is located in the small, unincorporated community of Salters in Williamsburg County. The depot dates to the mid-nineteenth century, when it served as one of many South Carolina stops along the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. In fact, Salters was originally known as Salters Depot or Salters Station.

Near Salters Depot, scenes like the one below are commonplace. Packing sheds, barns, and farmhouses dot the rural landscape and bear testament to the struggle of keeping agriculture alive in our state. The farmhouse shown below dates to the early 1900s and was recently recovered from invasive vegetation, revealing a beautiful lawn of flowers.

Reflections on Salters Depot

Salters Train Depot

Contributor Linda Brown of Kingstree, who took the photo above, shares this about the depot’s history:

It was built in the 1850s at the time the railroad came to Williamsburg County and served Salters for approximately 100 years. Salters was, of course, known for many years as Salters Depot or Salters Station. The late Charlie Walker, radio personality and columnist for the Kingstree News, never called Salters anything but Salters Depot, although he pronounced the last syllable of “Depot” as you would a cooking utensil.
