The purpose of the South Carolina Picture Project is to celebrate the beauty of the Palmetto State while preserving some of its vanishing landscapes.
When English settlers came to the area, they entered the territory of a powerful tribe, the Yemassee Indians. The two groups were able to work together and live harmoniously for a period. This peace came to an abrupt end in 1715 when the Yemassee and other native tribes rose up against unfair treatment by the British. The uprising became known as the Yemassee War.
Yemassee is pronounced YAM • uh • see by some and YEM • uh • SEE by others. Located just east of I-95, Yemassee’s town center is located in Hampton County, although a small portion of the town lies in Beaufort County.
