Completed in 1822, Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Pendleton is one of the oldest in the area. The bell tower used to contain a bell from the Seabrook, a ship which sailed from Charleston to Edisto Island during this time.
The bell was eventually donated to the Confederate Army to be melted down. The church also has a winding stairway, which leads to a balcony originally designated for slaves to worship.
There are many famous South Carolinians buried in the church’s cemetery. Mrs. John C. Calhoun, Thomas Clemson, founder of Clemson University, and his wife Anna Maria Calhoun Clemson, and Confederate General Barnard Bee are all buried here.
Rite I or Rite II at Communion services?
Hello Joseph, we checked out the official website and it just mentioned that there are alternating services for Rite I and Rite II but it did not mention specifically about Communion. We placed a phone call but the receptionist was not in to answer the question. If you would like to visit the official website the address is: http://www.holytrinityclemson.org/about-us/historic-st-pauls-church/ or you can reach them by phone at (864)-654-5071. We hope this helps! Thanks!
St. Paul’s is managed and maintained by Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Clemson. Two monthly services are held here: Holy Eucharist, on the first Sunday at 5:00 pm, and Evening Prayer, on the third Sunday, also at 5:00 pm.
Hi. Will there be a Christmas eve service this year? If so,I would like to attend.
Hi, Julie! Hopefully, the website above the map can guide you to a Christmas calendar of services for the church. Enjoy!
Is there information on people buried in your cemetery? I was there last week from Texas and hoped to see if you had the name of one of the plots in the Bee/Stevens area where the information has been worn away. Is there someone with those records? Can you give me a phone number? Thanks!
Hi, Paige. There is a website for the church above the map. Also, here is a phone number for the church: (864) 654-5071. Hopefully, this will lead you to someone who can help answer your questions. Best of luck!
Christmas Services are held each Christmas Eve at 7:00 pm.
