Lee County was formed in 1902 from portions of Sumter County, Kershaw County, and Darlington County. The county was named in honor of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
Located in the county seat of Bishopville, the Lee County Courthouse was completed in 1908, just six years after the county’s formation. It was designed in the Classical Revival style by Darlington native William A. Edwards. At the time it was considered one of the finest, most modern courthouses in the state.
