SC Picture Project / Sumter County / Wedgefield Baptist Church

This congregation was founded in 1881 when residents of the Wedgefield community gathered to discuss plans for establishing a Baptist church. Peter Mellette, a Confederate veteran whose wife was instrumental in planning the church, offered 50 dollars towards its development. Soon afterwards, a small group gathered on a railroad platform for the Baptists’ first service. The group of 14 charter members later met in the Methodist church before their new sanctuary, seen here, was completed in 1885 on land donated by James Aycock. Aycock also donated land for Wedgefield Presbyterian Church, which sits adjacent to its Baptist neighbor. The Alderman Lumber Company of nearby Alcolu donated an entire railroad car full of lumber for the construction of the church.

When the Santee Association held its session meeting at the new church in 1886, Lou Allen of High Hills Baptist Church was in attendance as a session member. Allen was the first female in South Carolina to serve as a member of a Baptist association. Today a modern sanctuary sits adjacent to the historic one, though both buildings are used by the active congregation.
