Capers Chapel Methodist Church

SC PICTURE PROJECT 1 Comment

SC Picture Project / Aiken County / Capers Chapel Methodist Church

Dating back to 1685, the community of Beech Island is one of South Carolina’s oldest settlements. Europeans originally called it Savanna Town after the Native Americans in the Savanna tribe who lived here along the shores of the Savannah River. In 1730 the township of New Windsor was laid out, and by the end of the Revolutionary War, the unincorporated community of Beech Island, whose name is still shrouded in mystery, had developed in its place. Churches were established, including Capers Chapel United Methodist Church in 1830.

My father and his mother, Ophelia Kaiser Page, are buried at Capers, a long way from New York where I have lived many long wonderful years.
