Coined the Seafood Capital of South Carolina, Murrells Inlet is a popular travel destination, offering visitors an array of waterfront dining options as well as water excursions from places like the Crazy Sister Marina.
The pier anchors one end of the popular Marsh Walk, a half-mile boardwalk which affords people a view of the inlet and sites such as Goat Island. The Marsh Walk also features signs educating folks about the marsh’s ecosystem. Spartina, or marsh grass, rustles in the salty breezes and reminds Marsh Walk visitors to relax and enjoy the sites and sounds of this historic and entertaining town.
During the warm months, goats are brought to Goat Island (seen below) – hence the name – to enjoy the breeze and keep vegetation at bay. Visitors delight in watching the flock while ambling down the boardwalk or eating a basket of hushpuppies. No visit to Murrells Inlet would be complete without the golden-fried treat, which can be found in any of the number of local seafood restaurants.
In fact, part of the fun of the Marsh Walk is deciding where to eat. With so many restaurants beckoning to hungry bellies such as the Dead Dog Saloon (seen below), it can be a tough decision! No matter where one dines along the Marsh Walk – and all of the restaurants are fun and fabulous – being able to look onto the water is the best part of the meal.
The Marsh Walk is wheelchair accessible and has several entry points. It is free and open to the public daily from sunrise to midnight.
Reflections on the Marsh Walk
Contributor Treva Thomas Hammond shares about her photo: “This pier stretches out across the waterway at Murrells Inlet’s Marsh Walk. At sunrise, the clouds and reflections paint the sky and water as the day begins.”
