SC Picture Project / Marlboro County / Zion Methodist Church

This former Methodist sanctuary just outside of Bennettsville was constructed in the late nineteenth century as Zion Methodist Church. The simple meeting house-style building served the congregation, which was on the Blenheim circuit in the days of itinerant preachers.

In the twentieth century, many congregations left the rural outskirts to join churches in larger communities. This is likely what happened with the membership of Zion Methodist Church, as the building was later used as a country store. It most recently housed a restaurant, the Riverway Grill. The Riverway Grill is now closed.

We would like to make this page better. Do you have knowledge or stories about Zion Church, the general store, or Riverway Grill that you can share? If so, please send it to the South Carolina Picture Project. Thank you!
