SC Picture Project / Spartanburg County / Spartanburg County Courthouse

In 1785, the Upstate’s Ninety-Six District was divided into three portions – Spartanburg County, Abbeville County, Edgefield County, Laurens County, Newberry County, and Union County. Two years later, a courthouse was built on land purchased from Thomas Williamson in the middle of Spartanburg County in present-day Spartanburg, the county seat. Both the county and the town were named for the Spartan Regiment, a local unit that fought in the Revolutionary War. Three other courthouses replaced the original over the following generations, with the current one completed in 1956. It was designed by architect Harold Woodward.
