Ford House

SC PICTURE PROJECT 1 Comment

SC Picture Project / Barnwell County / Ford House

This Barnwell home was built in 1891 for Ben C. Ford. The 1920 United States census lists Ford as a carpenter, so it is likely that he built the home himself. Though it has been restored over the years and is now equipped with modern conveniences, the Ford House maintains its original appearance.

Mr. Ben Ford was a black man. I knew the family well; his daughter, Ms. Alice Ford, and son, Mr. Charles Ford were were affectionately called Aunt Alice and Uncle Charles. Mr. Ben Ford while an excellent carpenter, was also an advocate for the rights of the black man in Barnwell, and was often sought out as an advocate; or for advice, when the need arose to address a matter of unfair treatment. He left an important legacy of service to the Black community of Barnwell.
